The Scottish Government has published minutes from a meeting of its Veterans Mental Health and Wellbeing Action Plan Delivery Group, outlining progress on several initiatives aimed at improving healthcare support for veterans in Scotland.

The meeting reviewed a range of developments relating to mental health services, research projects, and collaboration between healthcare providers and organisations supporting the Armed Forces community.

Among the topics discussed was the continued development of Scotland’s Veterans Mental Health and Wellbeing Action Plan, which aims to strengthen access to appropriate mental health services for veterans and ensure better coordination between support organisations and healthcare providers.

Officials also noted ongoing research examining the health and wellbeing of veterans in Scotland. This work is intended to improve understanding of long-term health outcomes for people who have served in the Armed Forces and help inform future policy development.

The minutes referenced collaboration between government departments, NHS services and veteran support organisations to improve awareness of veterans’ healthcare needs within the Scottish health system.

Scotland’s approach to veteran healthcare operates within the wider framework of the Armed Forces Covenant, while healthcare services themselves are delivered through Scotland’s devolved NHS structures.

Alongside policy development, the group also discussed engagement with organisations representing the Armed Forces community and efforts to ensure that veterans can access appropriate support when leaving military service and transitioning to civilian life.

The publication of the meeting minutes provides an update on how Scotland’s veterans’ health strategy is being implemented, although many of the initiatives discussed remain ongoing and subject to further development.

The Scottish Government says the programme aims to ensure that veterans across Scotland are able to access timely and appropriate healthcare services where needed.
